In May 2001, the company obtained provisional registration from the Republic of Kenya for use of Alphamir and Arthromir. These approvals were issued following initial clinical trials at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the federal agency responsible for all health-science research in that African nation. Updated clinical data was submitted in May 2002, which allowed expanded use of the two medicines as ethical drugs in 28 sub-Saharan African countries that are members of the East African Medical Conference.
In October 2007, BioChem Solutions entered in to a sub-license agreement with Molecular Technologies Ltd. in Nairobi, Kenya. The Kenyan government granted Molecular Technologies an extension of BioChem Solutions' provisional registrations, which authorizes continuing Phase 3 clinical trials of both medicines.
Additionally, protocols are now completed to begin trials at KEMRI for the new product Prophamir, a contraceptive vaginal gel intended to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
